iSearch – a web search launcher for S60 5th Edition
DailyDilbert – the online comic reading widget for Nokia N97, 5800 etc.
The iSearch widget is inspired by Russell Beattie’s Q Search widget. Russell made his with 30 lines of code – I used a bit more. iSearch widget has a touch friendly UI and there are currently 8 search options/engines to choose from. The widget is free but if you like it please consider making a donation.
WHAT DOES IT DO AND HOW?
iSearch speeds up the task of searching for stuff on the mighty Internet. Type a word to search for and click the service of your choice and the widget launches the phone’s browser and loads the result. The widget remembers the last thing that you searched for and displays it in the text box when you start the widget next time.
TIP! To make searching even faster you can set one of the services as default so that when you hit the ‘Enter’ key on the keyboard the widget launches the search right away. You set the default by clicking the ‘Enter’ symbol on the right end of the buttons.

INSTALLING
You can
- Download the widget straight to your phone and install it when prompted

You might want to add some sort of indicator to the text-entry box immediately though, as it wasn’t clear (to me at least) where to start typing if you’re in touch-screen mode. Also, in Q Search, the auto-closing of the widget after you search was a key part of the “get in, get out” quickness of it which I thought was important.
Anyways, good job, looks slick!

You are right on both things. I’m thinking about adding a text in the search box so that it will be clearer what to do on the first launch – something original like ‘type here’. And the auto-closing too – I’m thinking about making it a setting – a simple large checkbox below the buttons letting the user choose. Too bad the homescreen can’t be better utilized.

Very nice and useful widget!!
I suggest that you change the flickr url in the javascript file to:
url = “http://m.flickr.com/#/search/advanced_QM_q_IS_”+sterm;
which will open up the new mobile flickr page which in my opinion is better than the old one.
In my customised version of your widget, I also changed the youtube url to:
url = “http://www.youtube.com/results?q=”+sterm+”&nomobile=1&search_sort=video_date_uploaded”;
as I prefer the desktop version of the site and want the results sorted according to date.

It doesn´t work in my Nokia 5800, when I click (or double click) in a button (it doesn´t matter which one) NOTHING happens, the browser doesn´t open.
did you type anything in the white box above? it won’t do anything if you haven’t typed a word to search for.

It is not working with Nokia 5800, you can even tape anything because the keyboard didn’t show up. I even tried to use the virtual keyboard nothing happens, Enter/Ok/Touch, you can just get the vib when you touch but not working at all.

This is improved in the new version I just released. The first time you launch the widget there’s a text ‘type here’ in the text box.
You are very fast, “Type here” now makes the type field “visible”, in version 1.0, it looked just like a white bar, part ot the window but no more, newbies could never think they have to write there and then push a button.

And I think if there were a way to edit the launchers bu the user, e.g. to search in the wikipedia in another language, it would be much better.

I’ll make a better icon when I come up with something that won’t look like crap when the OS re-sizes the .png icon. And it does the re-sizing very poorly

how do i get this on the homescreen as widget? i cant find it in the “add content” list :/
Do you have the latest version – 1.1? That’s the one you can display on the homescreen of the N97. However due to the limitation of the homescreen it is just a big button :/

Grrat application and it works on Nokia 5800 XM very fast. One problem however, after installation I got a icon of a already deleted program. How to get the right one?
The correct icon should appear eventually. It’s bug in the Symbian OS – it apparently caches the widget icons and sometimes hangs on to them for too long.
