RELEASE – IMDb Widget for Symbian 5th Edition

Just letting you know that I’ve just released the IMDb Widget for Symbian 5th Edition. IMDb Widget allows you to quickly search for people or movie titles right on your phone and launch an extended search in services like Google, Youtube and so on.

this is perfect!! awesome!!
Brilliant application. Does the job just fine
The application looks really great, but I’m having some problems with it. If I search for e.g. Martin Scorsese, it won’t give me his own IMDb page, but it’s showing films containing the name Martin Scorsese.
It would also be nice if the application would view the films actors have played in instead of just the one they have produced.
That is exactly what the client does. When searching for people it displays persons details, movies he has acted in, movies he has directed and movies he has produced. BUT. The client is dependant on the IMDB data and the way the data is collected is not fool proof and in some cases a lot of the data is missing. Unfortunately this is something I can’t help. If you are interested about the data source and how it works check out blog.thumnet.com.
What do you mean by “exactly what the client does” ?
I can give you an example to show you the problems I’m having. If I for instance search for Mark Wahlberg, the application gives the right Wahlberg under popular results, and beneath his name it’s written that he has acted in The Departed. But if I go into Mark Wahlberg’s page, no films that he has acted in is listed, only the series and movies he has produced like “We own the Night” and “Entourage”.
This might be something you can’t do anything with since you aren’t behind the data, but I thought it would come in hand anyway.
And I just have to say that your applications are great, I’m using the iSearch several times every day
The IMDb Widget is made to work just like you are describing it should work. The persons details page should display a list of movies/series he/she has either acted in, directed or produced – all under their respective headlines. It seems the data feed is broken again meaning the IMDb may have changed something in their site causing a failure in the data scraping. Or then some bad data is still in the scrapers cache. The data is collected using multiple servers that have a ‘relay’ script running on them. It may be that not all hosts have updated their scripts to the latest version and this might corrupt the data feed. Not much I can do about it though except hope that the cache gets flushed soon and it just starts working. The data collecting is a volunteer project after all and the people participating can’t really be forced or rushed into fixing possible problems.
I will keep an eye on the data feed and report to the guy behind it if it doesn’t get better. I’m looking into making a version 2 of the IMDb Widget but there isn’t much point in it if the data keeps dropping of. Also I’m really short on time and these are my freetime projects so I really can’t promise it will be too soon.
If you wish to give feedback to the guy behind the IMDb data project go to blog.thumnet.com and look for ‘IMDB scraper’. He has done a lot of work making the IMDb data feed possible.
I appreciate your feedback on this – it’s nice to hear it from actual users.
uhm… your auto-respond didn’t read my problem did it. My keyboard goes all wonky and makes it impossible to search. N97 Mini. Scared me the first time because I thought the problem was with my phone. Only IMDB app does this. Random symbols and characters from keyboard input. Keyboard works fine everywhere else.
I’m having trouble with the IMDB widget on my N97 Mini. The qwerty keyboard doesn’t work at all. It randomly prints symbols or other characters. There’s no way to type input for searches. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling a couple of times. Wish it worked, I really like the app.
Did something happen?
Today my IMDB widget can’t find anything.
Even Avatar it says “unable to find anything with “avatar”
Today it’s back!
Was not working all day the 8th and now it works just fine again. I love this thing. Great widget.
Then it means the guy responsible for the system delivering the IMDB data has been busy again adapting the system to the changes in the IMDB.com. The widget is great but it wouldn’t exist if there wasn’t any data. Any fans of the widget please pop in to his site at blog.thumnet.com and show some love
Hi,
I have installed today the IMDB widget from the OVI store on my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, but a Person search doesn’t seem to find anything, it says Searching… forever. A Title search seems to work fine, though.
My version is V31.0.101, and I can’t say the version of the widget, it’s the one on OVI today
Thanks for any help!
Hmmm, the details of a Title are very odd, you can see the JavaScript or stuff
Hello. I wonder which widget you got from the Ovi Store as I haven’t put my widget there
It’s only available from moubail.com.
And as for now the data source for the widget seems to be broken – that’s why you are seeing the garbage in the results. It’s actually HTML from the IMDB.com site
Something has changed there and the data collecting system doesn’t work right at the moment. It worked very well for a while
Just have to wait and see what happens.
Hey, thanks for the reply!
You’re right, I did download from here, not from OVI (I got confused as I downloaded many things
)
Ok, we’ll wait for a while and see if IMDB fixes itself. Thanks for the widget anyway, it’s very nice and useful!
I´ve downloaded the IMDB Widget and it´s awsome, but for some reasons i only get HTML coes when i search for sth. I have Nokia N 97 mini
any thoughts ?
Yes that’s a known problem and it’s because the data source is broken. The data is read from the IMDB site through a scraping service and now it seems the scraping service is unable to get clean data from the site. This can’t be fixed in the widget so all we can do is wait and see if the data gets fixed. Sorry about that :/ The widget is super cool when the data is working – I hope you get to see it some day
It’s not working at all right now. I just get the “searching…” prompt and that’s it.
@admin I only see HTML characters. Will there be fix?
I would like to exchange links with your site http://www.moubail.com
Is this possible?
the app sucks now, its just displaying a bunch of html characters.
The app is working fine but the data it’s getting from IMDb.com is crappy right now – hence the HTML characters. Nothing I can do about that unfortunately. You can always go here – http://blog.thumnet.com/imdb-rest-webservice-update/129/ and leave a comment mentioning the IMDb Widget getting crappy data and hope that the maker of the IMDb data scraper has time to spare to fix the problem.
This is garbage! Do you actually like this?
Read my previous answer to ‘sidney’.
IMDb now has a mobile site — http://m.imdb.com. It might be a good idea to make a widget from it?
It now works! It no longer has that bunch of html characters, but somehow connects to the mobile IMDb website.
