Nokia 5800 XpressMusic gets a major firmware update to 20.0.12
Nokia has just released a new firmware version for the Nokia 5800. New firmware jumps straight to version 20.x – previous being 11.x. That kind of change in version numbering usually means significant changes in the code.
I’ve just installed the new firmware and it does seem to make the phone more responsive. There are also some changes in UI; bigger – finger-friendly tabs, a few new icons and the option to choose what you want to see on the stand-by screen – shortcuts, search, calendar etc. The speed of the new firmware is apparently achieved by using more memory as there seems to a bit less free memory available when on stand-by. This shouldn’t be an issue if the memory handling is well implemented.
The update is available through Nokia Software Update and in some areas also as FOTA – meaning you can update your device directly from the phones Settings menu. As usual – instructions on how you can update your firmware are found at Nokia’s Device Software -site.
Check your current firmware version using these instructions by Nokia or use the handy DeviceInfo Widget available right here at moubail.com.

UPDATE! The e-mail client seems to be working a bit smoother than before – also has some new icons. The dial pad has a new ‘sharper’ design.
UPDATE!! New features: built-in Dictionary, Application updater, Search added. The ‘Search’ works fast – you can search your contacts, files, messages etc. as well as search the Web. Generally the phone feels smoother overall. Geo-tagging for images taken with the phone, can also use the front camera.
